  1. This program is distributed on shareware basis.

  4. Tar is a tool to save files to archive media and restore them back
  5. again. Despite of its name, the program handles many media types,
  6. be it a floppy disk or regular file.
  7.  
  8. The program was initially written for UNIX operating system, but
  9. since many other OS support its format, tar became a useful tool
  10. for information exchange between different platforms.
  11.  
  12. There was number of tar implementations. What are the reasons to
  13. field another one?
  14.  
  15. Distinguishable features of the given program are:
  16.  - it process in a uniform way under both MS-DOS and UNIX clones;
  17.  - it does read/write UNIX-compatible floppies and quarter-inch
  18.    streamer cartriges under DOS;
  19.  - it supports unusual floppy formats: 80-tracks-by-9-sectors and
  20.    DEC Rainbow (under DOS);
  21.  - it supplies data compression option under both DOS and UNIX;
  22.  - it allows to read System V and/or GNU multivolume archives
  23.    under DOS and all UNIX clones;
  24.  - it includes option to restore damaged archives and plenty of
  25.    other useful options.

  35.      from Info-Zip 'zip' 2.01 distribution copyrighted by Mark
  36.      Adler, Richard B. Wales, Jean-loup Gailly, Kai Uwe Rommel,
  37.      Igor Mandrichenko and John Bush.

  39. Info-ZIP's software (Zip, UnZip and related utilities) is free and
  40. can be obtained as source code or executables from various
  41. anonymous-ftp sites, including ftp.uu.net:/pub/archiving/zip/*.

  43. Accordingly to Info-Zip copyright license terms you can also get
  44. original Zip sources directly from myself for the cost of
  45. overhead expenses only.

  48. II)  since LZW algorithm used by compress program is protected by
  49.      US patent, there are two versions of the program with certain
  50.      restrictions associated with them.
  51.  
  52.      Call the program without parameters to obtain info screen.
  53. First line contains version information - something like
  54. 'Tape ARchive utility    v3.15' with subsequent plus or minus sign.
  55. If this sign is
  56.  
  57.    minus (-), then
  58.      this version has unlimited distribution but provides less
  59.      functionality: it supports LZW extraction only, not
  60.      compression. Namely, both 'z' and ',' (comma) options will
  61.      work for extraction only (they will work with 't' or 'x'
  62.      options).

  64.    plus (+), then
  65.      this version includes full LZW support, i.e. it allows to
  66.      create compressed archives, but it may not be sold in US.
